History

The Bulgarian lands are ancient crossroads. They were populated from remote antiquity and remember many ancient civilizations. Steeped in history, today Bulgaria is left holding priceless art and architecture preserved throughout the centuries. The state of Bulgaria has 1300 years old history and according to the statistics it is ranked third (after Greece and Italy) for the number of its archaeological monuments. Bulgaria - the cradle of Slav culture, the land of Orpheus and Spartacus- has given the world men of great achievements, mysterious Thracian treasures and burial tombs, magnificent frescos and many brilliant examples of ancient applied arts.

Bulgaria remembers ancient civilisations and great people that wrote its turbulent history. Situated in Southeastern Europe, Bulgaria occupies the northeastern part of the Balkan Peninsula.

Bulgarian festivals and customs date back to ancient times when men tried to appease the natural elements and trembled before their power. Full of beauty, gaiety, mystical voices, fiery dances and brightly colored costumes - Bulgarian folklore has to be seen, felt and experienced!

Fire dancing is the most ancient mysterious ritual - barefooted dancers performing on burning embers. This is a religious and mystical ritual for expelling illness, for health and fruitfulness.

The Festival of Roses is a lovely festival celebrated in the Rose Valley near the town of Kazanluk (at the foot of the Balkan Range) on the first weekend of June every year. The festival is a pageant of beauty in the unique Rose Valley.

Kukeri Carnival held in the region of Dupnitsa and Pernik is a splendid festival of brightly colored masks and costumes which marks the beginning of the spring.

The Bulgarian voices are called to be mystery. Experts are still trying to explain the incredible range of the Bulgarian voice and the variety of songs.


Bulgaria is the crossroads to so many different cultures.

Sofia

Sofia-statue It grows but does not age!

Saint Sofia Dramatically ringed by the Balkan Mountains to the north and the Vitosha Mountains to the south, stands one of the oldest cities in Europe-Sofia. The history of Serdica-Sredets-Sofia can be traced back some 7000 years. Through the centuries, many nations have inhabited it and added to its rich and diverse history. Sofia has had several names in the different periods of its existence, and remnants of the city's millenary history can still be seen today alongside modern landmarks.

Locals meet for coffee at open-air caf�s, vast bazaars offer an array of pickles and farm produce, gypsies sell flowers on street corners, while shoppers queue to board the city's rattling trams and folk musicians serenade the metro users.

Technical University of Sofia

Technical University

Technical University of Sofia is the largest technical university in Bulgaria. It was founded in October 1945 under the name of machine-electro-technical institute �V.I.Lenin� and acquired a university status in 1995. Now the university has 14 faculties based mainly in Sofia, but also in Plovdiv and Sliven. There are 3 additional faculties with education only in English, German and French. Nowadays more than 14 000 students and 1000 teachers are making the university the place it is.
